What is asset tokenization, and how does it work on Shipfinex?

Modified on Wed, 5 Mar at 4:06 PM

Asset tokenisation is the process of converting ownership rights of a physical asset (like a ship) into digital tokens (Marine Asset Tokens - MATs) that can be securely bought, sold, and traded on blockchain technology.

On Shipfinex, the tokenisation process works as follows:

  • Shipowners list their maritime assets through an SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle).
  • Undergoes due diligence to verify asset quality, legality, and financial valuation.
  • Thorough due diligence procedures by Shipfinex's compliance teams to ensure adherence to international AML/CFT guidelines.
  • Approved maritime assets are digitally tokenised and listed on the Shipfinex marketplace.
  • Investors perform KYC, fund their wallets with USDC, and purchase MATS representing fractional ownership in maritime assets.
  • Investors earn dividends derived from the earnings of vessel operations and can exit by selling their MATs in the secondary marketplace on Shipfinex.
